Ok, seeing as we are discussing this on gtalk, I figured I would start a thread!
So here we go!
I think Kate shot Edward. I also think she was spying for Jacob, watching out for what Tanya was doing. That is why Tanya couldn't find Kate on the dance floor before she went to see Edward.
So excited for this to continue!!

OR maybe it was Esme. If Esme was able to relate to what her daughter was going through, maybe she would think that if Edward was dead, it would be easier on Tanya.

I think it is likely Kate that shot Edward, but I have a couple of theories as to why. One is exactly as The Dame says. Kate was in love with Edward and wanted him to be with her since Tanya was marrying Jake. He rebuffed her and she shot his ass. LOL
But the other theory is What if it was Jake she was in love with instead? What makes me think this is, Jake had said to Tanya after he caught her with Edward, that he had his own dalliances. Kate was shocked that Jake was going to marry Tanya anyways, even after she had slept with Edward. So what if she killed Edward thinking Jake would get the blame? To punish him for not wanting her even after it was clear Tanya didn't want him and had given herself to another man. She could have done it not wanting to have to watch her sister marry the man she loved.
Just another perpsective to toss around. Some food for thought. Bella definitely has some sort of a sixth sense and I believe she is there to avenge Edward's death and to tell his story and make it known who it is that killed him and why. But I don't see how we are going to have a HEA if he is a ghost.

Lets look at all the possibilities besides Kate.
The obvious, Jake or his father, Billy. Because it soiled Tanya. And she even tells us of how upset Billy was to have learned of the transgressions that had taken place and wanted to void the deal.
Carlisle: He was now facing the failure and ruin of his farm because of Billy wanting to void the deal. Edward had just gone to him a second time and admitted that Carlisle was furious.
Esme: For all the reasons the Dame said. Plus she could have also seen that not only one, but both of her daughters were in a tizzy over this man and she didn't want the upheaval in her home.
Just some more thoughts to ponder. LOL

Okay, here I am, Mary :-) All caught up.
All right, I seriously think Kate is involved, but I don't think she shot Edward. I don't mean to sound sexist, but for the time period, would a woman really know how to shoot a gun? Let alone aim straight for Edward's heart? It makes me think it is definitely a man...maybe some henchman of Billy's?
That being said, I wonder if there are key players that were not introduced in that little snippet of 1918? Maybe Kate was involved with someone else? Maybe he shot Edward? Are there more characters that are going to be introduced???
Lots to ponder...

Hi Noelle!
You have a valid point on the women of the era possibly not being able to shoot.
I don't know much about the aristocracy of that time period and what they taught the women and children.
Just had another thought too!
In the flashback, Tanya said she waited and hour for Edward to get there. In the flashback in Bella's vision, he was frantically packing his stuff up right before he got shot. So where was Edward for that hour that he was detained?? Because they died at just about the same time.

Man...now you have me thinking about that hour of time too. Such a good call there, friend. I completely forgot about that. LOL, maybe Edward over slept? Or maybe Kate figured out Edward and Tanya were running away together, and told Carlisle/Billy/Jacob and they had Edward locked up somewhere after Kate told them the plan. Maybe he was rushing around because he barely escaped?? There has to be more we're going to learn from Edward...
LOL, SOOOOOOOO many theories. I loved "LOST" so I do love plotlines that keep me guessing til the end. :-)
